Guy C. Parlett Post 7 Department of Maryland

Happy New Year!

I wish you and your family a healthy, prosperous 2024.

As we enter into a new year is time to focus on membership renewal, if you haven’t done so yet please renew your annual membership and update your contact information (i.e. Email, phone number, address). Membership dues are critical to the American Legion and the funds go toward keeping your local Post open and active.

The Post staff will be conducting a 100% membership cards validation so be prepared and have you membership card with you. In addition, I want to remind all that non-member of the American Legion Post must be signed-in by their legion sponsor and is required to leave when the sponsor departs the premises. In addition to membership renewal, the Post has conducted our annual door access change. New key cards are required to enter the Post and you can dispose of last years “Purple” cards. This year the key cards are “Red” and can be purchased at the bar for $2.00, however you will be required to show your current 2024 membership card at that time.

I want to thank Cynthia Campise our Judge Advocate for her extensive effort on editing and updating Post 7 Constitution, By-Laws, Standing Rules and House Code of Conduct. The up-coming February general membership meeting the Executive Committee will be eliciting approval from the general membership of revised documents.

Bingo - The weekly Thursday Bingo Night is temporarily suspended until further notice. Reduced attendance and the need for volunteers/staff is driving this decision. I want to recognize Cynthia Campise, Gary Rasicot and Jim Sabisch who as a volunteer team would set-up and conduct the bingo night after their normal full-time jobs. Thank you!

Baseball - Post 7 is planning to sponsor 3 Admirals teams this Spring and Summer.  Schedules will be posted.  Your Post is researching the creation of a Ladies Fast Pitch League in the County.  A briefing describing the potential league with 4 teams has been created and sent to high school athletic directors for comments.

Scouts - Post 7 sponsors Troop 396 Boy and Girl Scouts. We recently held a Court of Honor to award 3 Eagle Badges.  Three more are in the pipeline.  Scouts are welcome to complete projects at the post. Come by your post and see the new fire pit completed by an Eagle Scout.  For details, please contact Jason O'Neil at 703-627-7300(M).

Vietnam Veterans - Post 7 sponsors a 2-hour meeting for the Vietnam Veterans on Tuesdays from 10:00 until noon.  The attendance has grown from 6 veterans a couple years ago to over 30.  The veterans find value in learning how to navigate the VA health system as well as share experiences available in no other forum.

I want to remind everybody that Post 7 is run and supported by a majority of volunteers. Your help in keeping the premises clear of trash and cigar/cigarette ends is greatly appreciated. Please use to proper ash containers and empty them when your finished smoking.
